This part of the tutorial will cover all prerequisites needed before starting the Gentoo installation on your PS3.

1. Download the Gentoo install image file and burn it
2. Prepare the HDD on PS3

- start the PS3 and go to Settings -> System Settings and format your HDD using the Format Utility
Note: All saved data will be lost!
- click on Allot 10GB to Other OS

3. Copy PS3 directory (including subfolders) from CD on your USB flash disk
4. Safetly remove flash disk form your computer and plug-in it into PS3
5. Go to Settings -> System Settings and choose Install Other OS
6. After that choose Settings -> System Settings -> Default OS. Select Other OS from the list. This will make that PS3 will use Other OS after restart
7. Remove the USB drive and insert the Gentoo install CD into PS3
8. Restart your system. After that you will see the the kboot prompt
9. Hit Enter

Now you are ready to proceed to part II of the installation.
